Sep 11: It was raining awards for the Australians last night at the International Cricket Council (ICC) awards ceremony 2007, as they picked up five major awards out of eight categories in which they were nominated at the Sandton Convention Centre at Johannesburg.
The surprise element of the award night was unfolded with Indian all-rounder Jhulan Goswami, becoming the first Indian to bag the ICC Woman Cricketer of the Year award; she not only brought laurels for herself but also did her country proud. She was the lone contender from India’s side in the awards ceremony
Australian Captain Ricky Ponting had a double delight, by becoming the first cricketer to win the ‘ICC Player of the year’ award in a row, and also won the ‘Captain of the year’ award. Besides these, he got an extra cherry as an icing on the cake by making it to the Test and ODI teams of the year.
Australian opening batsman Matthew Hayden, who was on his comeback trail, won the One Day International, ‘ODI Player of the Year’ award, while the ‘Most Emerging Player of the Year award went to Aussie pacer Shaun Tait. The Kenyan all-rounder Thomas Odoyo received the newly instituted, ‘Associate ODI Player of the Year’ award, for the six associate member countries of the ICC.
The ‘Umpire of the Year’ award was picked up by ICC Elite panel umpire Simon Taufel for the fourth time in a row while Pakistan’s Mohammed Yousuf was named as ‘Test Player of the Year’. He surpassed the record of, legendary former West Indies batsman Vivian Richard’s, most Test runs and most centuries in a calendar year. Yousuf piled up 1,788 runs and hit nine tons in 2006.
The ICC’s Spirit of the Year award won by the Sri Lankan team ahead of Australia, New Zealand and Ireland, as Lankans was fairly successful over the last year. The only consolation for the Men in Blue and for the people of India was that the master blaster Sachin Tendulkar found a place in the ODI Team of the Year as there was no nomination of any male Indian player in the awards category, All the nominations finalised for the ICC awards ceremony were based on the performances from Aug 09, 2006 to Aug. 08, 2007.
