A surprising and slighting package for Indian Hockey Team

New Delhi, Thu, 06 Sep 2007 NI Wire

Sep 06: Just when the Indian hockey team returns to triumphant and ready to relish all interest with excellent performance in the ongoing Asia Cup Championship, the Indian Hockey Federation president KPS Gill have come up with a silly proposal of awarding a Rs 1000 per goal scored but at the same time punishing Rs 2000 for everyone passed.

Mr. Gill have announced this so called bonus amount just keeping the amount of goals India have scored in Asia Cup but that will end in team’s loss with less appreciation. Though our team has been scoring consistently against their opponents but in a close match this kind of token bonus is nothing but punishment for the players.

In fact one can really understand that there is no logic behind the decision as its unlikely in a international championship where the margin of goals scored are very less, it will offer less to the players. If one wants to give reward to players for their success then why punish them charging double the reward amount. If IHF is really going to deduct money from player’s payment then it’s certainly an insult to our players.

KPS Gill pointing out India’s performance against Sri Lanka in which they beat Lankan more than convincingly with a 20-0 victory said he wanted to appreciate players' consistent performance by giving them bonuses but also wanted them to understand the "importance of defending our goalpost".

The current declaration means that Indian team will get Rs 30,000 for the 30 goals they have scored in the Asia Cup Championship so far. As there are not much sponsors for our hockey team Rs 30,000 matters a lot but again penalising our players is not worthy at all when they have already booked their place in the Asia Cup hockey tournament semi-finals.

Though Gill said it will act as a motivation for our players but will also add more pressure while playing big games and this may hamper their performances. However, IHF officials have not made it clear whether they are actually going to implement it or not but if it happens so then it shows our lack of insight in our management.
