Four major comments have been made by four VIPs of Bangladesh in the very recent past, which are the reflection of present political scenario of the country. The Chief Advisor (CA) of interim government said that it is not the proper time for total withdrawal of the State of Emergency; Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) expressed his displeasure over the quality of candidates, who are running in the scheduled four City Corporation and nine Municipal election.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) said that only commission alone would not be able to curb corruption, it is a social phenomenon; it should be addressed socially and through administrative and legal measures. However, ACC chairman expressed his firmness about the ongoing drive against corruption.
On the other hand Sheikh Hasina, the president of Bangladesh Awami League (AL) said that the ongoing anti-graft drive of interim government is a lesson for unhealthy politics. She was addressing a gathering of her party supporters in London.
Apart from, there are some other developments have been recorded in the political pitch of Bangladesh, important one is the anticipation of EC on holding Upazila election in almost 300 units out of the 482, as the voter list has been finalised. EC also expecting that the Upazila election could be conducted on October 2008. Election in other units of Upazila will be held after parliamentary election, which is scheduled for the 3rd week of December 2008.
Union Council Okayajot (Unity) demands Upazila election before the parliament poll, blaming the political parties that they are not willing to reintroduce Upazila Council. But major political parties of the country are in the mood to resist Upazila Council Election, if EC or government wants to hold it before the parliamentary poll.
Parties are arguing that the result of Upazila Council Election would have an obvious influence on the national level, which will jeopardise the concept of level playing field. Senior politicians of the country are arguing that if there is any confusion, EC should declare the schedule of Upazila Council Election dating after 15 days of parliamentary vote. Newly elected political government will take over the state power after the Upazila Council Election. In this situation government is in a hope that all political parties will be convinced to join in Upazila Council election as of the schedule declared by EC.
Political observers said that on Upazila issue government and parties are not in the same line of thinking which is why government is unwilling to withdraw state of emergency in entirety. Rather authorities are in a mood to withdraw emergency phase by phase.
There is another thing observed by the political analysts that anti-graft drive taken by the interim government gives Awami League a fresh image and provides an upper hand than Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) as the party was in power just before the take over of military backed interim government. In consideration of this situation, AL has an intention to make possible parliamentary election first. Recent opinion of Sheikh Hasina can be linked to the above-said strategy of her party, the analysts assumed.
BNP as a just-gone party from power is not in a situation to overcome the challenges of election, national or local, within the time frame given by the government and the authority. That is why BNP is not much interested to join in the election process. Apparently both AL and BNP are talking with the same tone, but cause and strategy of the parties are not the same. However, as per the observation of political analysts, though AL and BNP are spelling same words, but there is no possibility of any joint movement in any case.
The interim government and the EC had an expectation that under the state of emergency and with the influence of anti-corruption drive a reflection of qualitative change in candidature would be surfaced. But CEC is upset over the present quality of candidates.
Political observers said that the actions of the interim government and authorities are regular initiatives in nature, which is also expected for all time, that could be a starting point for changes to come in administrative process and society. It can not change any thing over night. It was good to be optimistic; it is a utopia to hope that all candidates will be highly educated, qualified and skilful.
Analysts also mentioned that it is not the time to be frustrated, it is the time to make the people convinced that government, EC, other related authorities and political parties are running together for a better democratic Bangladesh.
