Nicotine may help Alzheimer patients, says a study

New Delhi, Thu, 17 Jul 2008 NI Wire

Amidst stern warning to smokers indicating “smoking is injurious to health” by the various studies/scientists, a new study has at least come in favour of them citing one good feature that smokers with time may improve their memory and concentration level.

The research has found that nicotine based drugs has shown signs of improvement in brain. But, mind it! This brighter part of smoking does not undermine the deadly risk of cancer, heart disease, stroke or addiction among tobacco users, as nicotine has multiple effects.

In the recent study conducted by scientists from the Institute of Psychiatry at King's College, London, the researchers find that nicotine present in tobacco, though is addictive and harmful, but can augment memory, learning, attention and concentration. The findings could provide a new dimension to the human being's health as increasing concentration felt by smokers could assist in battling dementia.

The nicotine-based tests were parts of laboratory experiments done on rodents. The tests have been completed and researchers believe that tobacco chemical could avert the onset of Alzheimer's and give crucial extra time to the affected persons. The tests resulted into increasing concentration and stimulating responses.

Nicotine, present in tobacco, cocoa and even in tomatoes, acts as a stimulant and augments the body's adrenaline flow.

Lead researcher Professor Ian Stolerman said that smoking is injurious to health as it contains other pernicious chemicals. Nicotine, likewise, is both harmful and beneficial too.

The professor did not discard the apprehensions that people who would undergo nicotine based therapies could possibly be addicted to it. But the possibility of abusing a medicine based on pure nicotine-like substance is very small.

The medicine (nicotine pill) would take at least five years in developing. Stolerman said that nicotine pill would not cure the person affected with Alzheimer rather it would give them few months of independent life.

The findings of the study could be a ray of hope for Alzheimer patients. But, for people, leading healthy life, in no way can be suggested to have nicotine in the form of smoking as smoking is still injurious to health.
