Aug 04: India’s tennis sensation Sania Mirza lost to defending champion Maria Sharapova in straight sets in one of the quarter final clashes that ends the run in her third appearance in the tournament.
Sharapova currently ranked 2 nd continued her confident and aggressive game of play that was too much to handle for 20-year-old Sania as her serve in the entire match was poor. In the first game of the first set Maria broke Sania’s serve and though Sania came back with some classic forehand play but repeated lost of serve and some double faults cost her match.
Mirza after falling behind 0-2 did come back in the third game to register her first game win but soon failed to serve in couple of occasion that helped Maria to increase her lead to 5-1 and eventually the first set in 6-2.
The highlight of the second set is that the Indian did not manage to win one of her serve though she broke Sharapova’s serve once. She broke the serve in the fifth game of the second set but was not enough as she lost her serve in the very next game and Maria own the one hour long match in 6-2, 6-1.
Even though Sania lost the match it can improve her WTA ranking which is currently on the 31 st stair.
Now on Saturday in the first semifinal Sharapova will meet fellow Russian Anna Chakvetadze who defeated three-time Acura Classic champion Venus Williams in a classic three-set match 6-7, 7-6, 6-2.
In other semifinal clash Russian Elena Dementieva will face Patty Schnyder. Dementieva in her quarter final match beat fellow Russian Maria Kirilenko, 6-2, 6-4 and Schnyder who beat Nadia Petrova in 6-2, 6-4.
