July 28: Now-a-days Islamabad has become a hot spot of targets of radical Islamist militants after the ‘Red mosque’ episode in which almost 100 people died when government security forces attacked the mosque to capture hundreds of Islamic militants who kept hundreds of people hostages.
Former clerics along with students demanded the imposition of Islamic Sharia law in the country by the government.
The mosque again plunged into violence when it was re-opened for Friday prayers after the repairing of the damaged parts of the building and reoccupied by the militants. Students did not let the new cleric hold prayers and abusing President Musharraf called for ‘Islamic Revolution’. They also glorified the killing of Abdul Ghazi as bringing Revolution.
In protest they painted the mosque in its original colour red which was earlier painted by the government in yellow colour and demanded the freedom of the former chief cleric Abdul Aziz caught in the storming of the mosque by the security forces.
Those pro-taliban students unfurled the jihadi flags on the minarets on which painted were the two swords indicating the conflict between government and militants.
While coming out of the mosque they stormed police and their vehicles with stones. They expressed their anger over the storming of the mosque by the security forces and killing of Abdul Rashid Gazi.
Overtaking of the mosque by the radical students was confirmed by the senior security official.
A series of suicide attacks, bombings and shootings specially targeting policemen and security forces has clouded the city in which almost 180 people have been killed across the country.
President is insistent on making the nation a moderate and progressive one removing any prospect of extremism which is currently facilitating terrorism supported by Al-qaeda supporters in the north-west part of Pakistan.
To prevent any further violence in the mosque security forces used metal detectors but removed on the protest of people which again worsened the situation. Yesterday bomb blasted in an open restaurant near police barracks. This was one of the major bombing to wreck the city in which 13 policemen have been killed.
It seemed to be targeting the security force which has roped the mosque after the protest was handled by the police.
These round the clock violent activities of the militants in the heart of the city are creating mounting pressure on Musharraf as US also has warned to take unilateral military action on the bases of Al-Qaeda in Pakistani tribal areas.
