Lucknow, Dec 12 (IANS) As many as 25 government-run schools in Uttar Pradesh's Azamgarh district have come under the scanner for anomalies in the Mid-Day Meal (MDM) scheme sponsored by the central government, an official said Friday.
'We have listed at least 25 schools that were not providing regular lunch to their students,' official in-charge of basic education in Azamgarh Paras Nath told IANS by telephone. Azamgarh is about 300 km from here.
Some of these schools in villages like Jahanganj, Bahadurpur, Senduri, and Jindopur were not providing lunch to the students for the last three months, he added. About 150,000 schools are covered under the MDM scheme in Uttar Pradesh.
The anomalies came to the fore during the ongoing surprise inspections of various schools, following repeated complaints by some parents.
'Strict action would be taken against all such school authorities. An enquiry has already been initiated in this regard,' Nath said.
Under the MDM scheme, lunch is provided to students till Class 8. Over 18.6 million students are enrolled under the scheme in the state.
