July 18: India’s Sania Mirza continuing her good WTA performance moves to the second round both in singles and doubles. In singles she registered a comfortable win over American Abigail Spears in straight sets: 6-4, 6-3 and progress to the second round.
Though she had a bad start losing the first three games to spears but manages to comeback into the game and eventually won the opening set with 6-4. The 140 th ranked Spears was not up to the mark and loss the second set 3-6.
In the last two WTA events, Sania Mirza had reached to the quarter final and so there was a bit pressure on the 20-years old to continue her good performance.
Sania had undergone a knee surgery and that can be seen in her game; with her cautious effort. As far as her game is concerned, she did win 69 percent of her first serve in which she is good at.
The third seed Indian and currently ranked 38 th in the world certainly looking forward to improve her previous performance in the WTA events. Though she only managed to reach the second round of Wimbledon but in WTA events her chances have increased as players like Serena Williams, Marion Bartoli and last year runner-up Katarina Srebotnik have withdrawn from the tournament.
Considering the ranking and number as irrelevant she said that in tennis ranking doesn’t hold much importance and it is only a particular day in which if someone play a good match they could win.
Probably the match was a bit difficult as Mirza admitted that she didn’t have any clue of Spear’s playing style and hence it makes her a bit more complex while facing the serve. But after a considerable win she looks more confident to continue her good performance against Varvara Lepchenko in the second round.
Paring with American Bethanie Mattek, Sania also manage to proceed to the second round of doubles by defeating Catalina Castano ( Colombia) and Meng Yuan ( China) in the first round. Now they will either take on Kirsten Flower (USA) and Connie HSU ( China), or Lilia Osterloh ( USA) and Anastasia Rodionova ( Russia).
