Sambalpur (Orissa), June 29 (ANI): Farmers in Orissa stand to gain with better irrigation of their lands with the dredging and desilting of the catchment area and the feeder canal of the Hirakud Dam in Sambalpur District of Orissa.
With the dredging and desilting of the reservoir and feeder canals, the capacity of the catchment area is enhanced and subsequently better irrigational facilities are assured for the farmers.
Earlier, the silt in the reservoir and the feeder canals had become a stumbling block to clear flow of water.
The farmers of Sambalpur largely depended upon the Sason canal to irrigate their land. But for the last couple of years, the farmers in the tail area of the canal had been complaining of not getting sufficient water to irrigate their lands.
They even requested Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to grant them help.
Following which the Government of Orissa sanctioned rupees 30 crore for the dredging of the reservoir and the canal to clear them of the silt. (ANI)
