Football camp for peace organised in Nagaland

Kohima, June 27 (ANI): With euro 2008 fever running high across the world, a Soccer club in Nagaland has organised a two-week long football camp to promote peace through the game.

 

Naga Boys Club (NBC), a premier football club in the state, has organized the football-coaching camp in Kohima from June 16-31.

 

The NBC club, which was formed by like-minded footballers in 1999, aims to promote peace and brotherhood through this camp.

 

In the camp around 102 boys and girls are honing up their skills to become future champions.

 

Roko Angami, President, Naga Boys Club (NBC) we want to bring away the local youth from violent activities and promote peace through sports.

 

"Our Youth, many of them are involved in gun battle killing our own brothers and instead of doing that we wanted to set up our young boys to come up and play for our state," said Roko Angami.

 

The participants at the camp are being coached by footballers of international repute like L.Chaoba Devi, Biten Singh and Asharani.

 

Choaba Devi, one of the coaches at the camp and former Indian football captain expressed optimism about sports activities in the region promoting peace.

 

"Sports will surely bring peace in northeast. There is no bandh for sports lovers. Because of sports there is freedom. Sports for peace is good and I 100 per cent believe that sports will bring peace," said Choaba Devi.

 

The local youth love football and one of the participants at the camp said that football provides an outlet to the pent up feelings of the youth who otherwise are attracted to insurgency and are taking to the gun.

 

The NBC club has been producing players of national and international repute.

 

Some of the trophies won by this club include Naga Students Federation trophy, the Peace tournament organized by Assam Rifles and Classic Club.

 

In a cricket crazy country, Kohima presents a different picture with its love for football. (ANI)
