July 07: French starMarion Bartoli, who is currently ranked 18 th, defeated world number one Justine Henin in a thrilling semifinal here on yesterday. The 22-year-old produced a stunning match with 1-6, 7-5, 6-1 win and reserved her place in the final.
Bartoli made a fine comeback after getting one set down and acquired the second set with stiff fight of 7-5. She is now for the first time in her career to compete in a grand slam final.
Many didn’t have any faith on the French woman and it was everyone’s believe that Henin might have registered another easy win. Even it appeared the same as Henin won the first set comfortable with 6-1. But Bartoli who had only reached the fourth round in her previous appearance ensure the second set.
Though the French’s serve is not impressive but she hits hard in her double-handed backhands and forehands.
Now she will face three-time champion Venus Williams who in her semifinal clash beat sixth seeded Serb Ana Ivanovic in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.
Venus Williams currently ranked 31 st is now everyone’s favorite to win her fourth title. She had already won it in 2000, 2001 and 2005 but the current performance of Bartoli may make her fight a lot for the title.
"I've never played Venus but I've beaten the world number one so I've got a lot of confidence," Bartoli said. She really looks confident and who knows it may be her first ever title and it may be the biggest ever upset in Wimbledon history. Today in the decider one can expect another breathtaking match.
