Malegaon blasts case: Pandey sent to 3-day transit remand

New Delhi, Thu, 13 Nov 2008 NI Wire

Dayanad Pandey, the tenth accused in the Malegaon blasts case, who was arrested on Wednesday by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorists Squad (ATS) in Kanpur has been sent to the three-day transit remand till November 16.

Pandey was produced before the Magistrate Mukesh Kumar at his residence by the ATS, and was given the three-day transit remand so that he could be produced before the Nashik court.

Pandey alias Sudhakar Dwivedi was earlier detained from Kanpur and taken to Lucknow for questioning, and a day later was formally arrested.

The ATS said that Pandey was involved in the blasts conspiracy that killed six people in September.

He was apparently in touch with Lieutenant Colonel Purohit, a serving army officer and the alleged mastermind behind the Malegaon blasts, whose arrest brought Pandey into the police net.

Acting on the report that Pandey also visited a temple in Faridabad, ATS also raided the temple in search of evidence against the seer. Reports also claim that Pandey, who is the head of a math in Jammu and was famous with the name of Swami Amritanand, was actively involved in the Amarnath land row in Jammu.

ATS has also been claiming that those arrested in connection with the Malegaon blast could also be connected to the Parbhani, Jalna and Nanded blasts. ATS also indicated that there might be more arrests in the Malegaon blasts case.

The Malegaon blasts case has now acquired an all India connection: first, the accused were arrested from Madhya Pradesh mainly from Indore and Jabalpur; secondly, from Maharashtra’s Pune and Nashik and now from Uttar Pradesh.
