Sharma, Sidebottom to miss Ind-Eng series opener

New Delhi, Thu, 13 Nov 2008 NI Wire

Indian pace bowler Ishant Sharma, 20, will miss the first match of seven one-day international against England scheduled for Friday at Rajkot. He has been ruled out due to an ankle injury, and hence has been advised for a five days’ rest.

The fast bowler, who was awarded Man of the Series for his 15 wickets as India retains the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with a 2-0 win over the Aussies, had suffered an ankle sprain during the series.

Besides, star batsman Sachin Tendulkar has also been rested for the first three matches.

England Left-arm paceman Ryan Sidebottom will also sit out the opener due to an Achilles tendon problem. The tourist team, which in recent has displayed poor form by losing to the Stanford Superstars in Antigua and then a warm-up match at the hands of Mumbai XI, faces a tough challenge ahead.

However, to some relief, fast bowler Stuart Broad has been cleared to appear in Rajkot match after suffering a knee injury during a practice match in Mumbai on Sunday.

Currently placed third in the ICC rankings, England had won last year's home one-day series against India 4-3 after losing 5-1 in their previous series in India in 2006.
