What else can a feeble common man do when the protectors of the law themselves becomes the violators except the one what the Rohtak woman did after being failed to get justice.
Two-month long distress, pain, humiliation, and scoff even could dare to face the taunting eyes of the society, but the reckless, rash and non-cooperative approach of the policemen eventually led her to commit suicide.
Body is dead, tongue is soundless, but an eye full of unanswered question still asking the protectors of law- what was my fault. Had I committed crime being born as a woman? Is pauperism in itself a crime? Is the law different for potent and impotent? Or else the police have the divine right to rape a helpless woman and other policemen have duty to protect the accused as it belongs to its own flock.
Surrounded by stern flak and howls of protests across the state, the Haryana government eventually woke up from a deep sleep and the Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda put the foot down and ordered transfer of top cops of Rohtak.
The government cracked the whip on three senior police officials and removed SP and DSP from the posts with immediate effect and also transferred Anil Dabra, the Inspector General of Police for mishandling the Sarita rape and suicide case.
After the government another tight slap to police was led by villagers by making the duo rapists surrender before the district SP late on Wednesday night. They had been arrested on charges of 'rape by public servants on duty'.
It was April 10- the dreadful day for 28-year-old Sarita, who was allegedly raped by two Rohtak policemen-Head Constable Balraj Singh and Constable Silak Ram and absconded since then.
Sarita was just a matriculate and leading her life amid hope and sorrow. She had married against the desire of the family of both sides. The couple had a rented house from where she used to run a bangle shop as her husband had no permanent source of income.
Life was already a question for the luckless lady. The nasty act of the two policemen led her caved inside the room and the negligent act of senior police officials by not putting an ear further aggravated her agony.
June 9 brought eternal peace for her free from all sufferings when she committed suicide at the premises of the DGP's Panchukula office.
The sincere and timely effort of the police could save an innocent and hapless life, but instead of doing that the police were spending their energy in saving the life of its own accused policemen.
The frustration of taking no action against the accused policemen eventually proved a final blow for her. But her longing eyes still asking the officials....what was my offence....?
