Overnight dialysis significantly improves survival rate

New Delhi, Mon, 10 Nov 2008 NI Wire

‘Enhance the time duration of dialysis and reduce the risk of death,’ claimed Turkey scientists at a seminar organised at the American Society of Nephrology's 41st Annual Meeting and Scientific Exposition in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Dr. Ercan Ok, MD, Ege University in Izmir, Turkey and the team leader of this research team has claimed that the kidney failure patients who undergo hemodialysis (one out of two types of dialysis) eight hours overnight, three times a week could get better results in comparison to conventional four-hour hemodialysis thrice a week.

‘The risk of death reduces dramatically by nearly 80% and patient gets more purified blood,’ claimed Ercan.

‘The extended duration of overnight hemodialysis enhances the serum protein (albumin) level, reduces the need of medication, control better on blood pressure, carry the levels of mineral phosphate towards normal and lessen the chance of risk of blood pressure drops during dialysis, a common problem with conventional hemodialysis,’ added Ercan Ok.

This new research has revealed that expanding time limit of hemodialysis improves the appetite, weight, physical and mental performance apart from up to 72% of medication reduction.

Some patients, who were the part of this research, have also claimed to return their jobs and better work performance, claimed Ok.

The researcher’s team has conducted the experiment on 224 dialysis patients for one-year span and all of them had undergone for eight hour overnight three days a week hemodialysis and the outcomes were outstanding, said Ok.

“The hospitalisation rate during follow-up was a fourth of that observed in patients treated with four-hour conventional hemodialysis, most importantly, our results confirmed that longer dialysis produces significantly better patient outcomes, with a 78 percent reduction in mortality rate,” he added.

The patients spent three nights a week at the dialysis centre and within one month all patients had adopted this system. “After an adaptation period of a month, all patients slept during the night without any complaint," says Dr. Ok.

Appraising this research work, Dr. Ok said, “We expect that these data would be convincing to the whole of society including physicians, patients, health authorities, and social security institutions for the necessity of longer hemodialysis in order to improve high mortality and morbidity."

The European Nephrology Dialysis Institution had granted for this study.
