Chandigarh, Nov 6 (IANS) A Haryana village headman, who allegedly killed two women on Diwali night over a property dispute, was arrested here, a police official said Thursday.
Shribhagwan Singh, Sarpanch (headman) of Karaur village in Rohtak town, around 250 km from here, was nabbed here Wednesday morning.
'Shribhagwan Singh was absconding since Nov 28 after killing two village women on Diwali night. He was arrested by the Chandigarh police here, near the football stadium in Sector 17,' said a police official.
Sribhagwan's brother Dilbagh Singh and friend Anand Kumar, who were accompanying him, were also arrested.
'We saw three men who started running away on seeing us. We immediately chased and arrested them. Interrogation revealed their involvement in the dual murder in a Rohtak village,' Amanjot Singh, sub-inspector, special crime investigation cell, Chandigarh told IANS.
'The accused were absconding since Nov 28 and had come to the city to meet their advocate. We have informed the Rohtak police about their arrest. They were produced in a court Wednesday and have been lodged at Burail jail here,' said Singh.
He alleged that they had murdered Roshni and Rani of Karaur village over a land dispute and had shot at their mother-in-law, Hoshyari Devi. Devi was shifted to a hospital in Rohtak in a critical condition and is still struggling for her life.
'Many cases of murders and attempt to murder have been registered against Sribhagwan, but none of the villagers dared to speak against him. After last week's killing, the police raided Sribhagwan's house and recovered many illegal weapons from there,' said a police official from Rohtak on phone.
