Rahul's 'yuvraj' row an act of political incompetency

New Delhi, Tue, 22 Apr 2008 Vikash Ranjan

Say a word and get lots of explanation (pro/against) by the politicians. If it goes against, you would think multi times why did I say. One would be happy to get adverse reaction if said intentionally and at the same time could face criticism if said unforeseeable.

A wise man speaks after thinking a lot and fool speaks first and thinks later. The consequence in this way could be disastrous for the delayed thinker and unreasonably drag him into the pool of trouble and controversy though applies everywhere but especially if such languages are used on political platform.

Giving credence to the above fact a row of controversy sparked in the Rajya Sabha on Monday following the term “Yuvraj” “the future king” and even “Gautam Buddha” accredited by a Congress MP to the AICC general secretary and young Gandhi-Nehru scion Rahul Gandhi. The moniker used for Rahul Gandhi was furiously reverted by the Oppositions comprising the Left, an ally of the UPA government at the Centre.

If the Congress young MP is portrayed as yuvraj, then the party must have a ‘rajmata’ and a ‘maharaja’ too, the main oppositions party BJP sarcastically passed the comment after a Congress Rajya Sabha member E M Sudarsana Natchiappan called Rahul as a people’s prince.

While the BJP leader Balbir Punj stormed the Congress for somebody was being hailed as yuvraj in the democratic era, the CPM MP Brinda Karat fuelled the dialogue going between the ruling and the opposition by saying, “referring somebody yuvraj is not acceptable in the democracy. In fact such a remark is a blot on democracy, she said.”

Gone are the days when Raja and Maharaja ruled the state in India. They have been shown the door a long ago. So far it is justifiable to use the term yuvraj, she asked citing the Nepal model where people, the actual king of the democratic government had ousted the monarchy and established democracy in its place.

Although Rahul Gandhi earlier been hailing as the yuvraj by some of the Congress members and in the media gallery too, but the yuvraj episode highlighted especially after the young Gandhi’s four-day Bundelkhand journey.

The tour to Bundelkhand region made a memorable mark in Rahul Gandhi’s political life with his first-ever street corner dharna and his mingling with the villagers by subsiding the local Congress leaders to get the first hand experience of their problems. Instead of taking assistance from the local Congress leaders, Rahul sought support of the NGO’s that coordinated his visit.

Making base of the Rahul Gandhi’s Bundelkhand historical tour, the Congress leader exuberated while saying Rahul lika a Yuvraj (people’s prince) stormed the Divisional Commissioner’s office with his band of villagers and submitted memorandum regarding villagers’ plight and deprivation of their right to jobs under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS).

No doubt the Rahul Gandhi has been doing for sometime a remarkable and selfless work not only with the purpose of upliftment of the party, but also to know and understand the rural India by visiting and marching rural areas. His eating, sleeping, and spending valuable time with the Dalits would help him in discarding caste distinction and propagation of message: “no difference in people and people.”

It is the personal experience-which would help him understanding people’s plight- the experience, which is completely different from the one getting in the air-conditioned office. Heedless of some controversies sparking of his tour, the Nehru-Gandhi scion should stick to his work.

Besides, firstly the Congressmen should escape from sycophancy. The work speaks for itself. Why these men need to miff the Oppositions by repeatedly saying the same moniker?

These comments/compliments raising at the platform of Parliament only disrupt its proceeding culminated into loss of everything from time to money, and progress etc. Secondly, in this context in particular, Oppositions should view the ‘yuvraj’ as an accolade for Rahul and not the real yuvraj (prince) and so should escape from precipitating the unnecessary issues.

When there is a lot of problem before the nation to discuss, how could these leaders conscience allow them to indulge on trivial issues, which is of not avail. Fraying over such an insignificant issue only shows the political incompetency of all leaders involving in the row.
