Onboard Air India One, Oct 26 (ANI): Speaking on recent violence in Maharashtra and its backlash in Bihar, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has appealed to all political parties and all men and women to realise the gravity of the situation fanning regional tensions.

"I don't want to criticize any government while I am on foreign soil, but it is very unfortunate that these incidents have taken place. Tribal animosities are an act of disservice to our country. All of us have an obligation regardless of our political affiliations to do nothing, which will work against the unity, integrity and social cohesion of our country," Dr. Singh said while talking to reporters. The recent violence erupted in Maharashtra following attack by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers on North Indian candidates appearing in a railway exam in Mumbai's suburb Kherwadi.

The Mumbai Police arrested Raj Thackeray from a guesthouse in Ratnagiri after a case was registered against him in connection with a case of attack against North Indians. Later, he was granted bail.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) blamed both the ruling parties - the Congress and the NCP - in Maharashtra for the violence.

Senior Janata Dal-U leader and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar demanded strict actions on the perpetrators of violence.

Earlier, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati had demanded MNS be banned, echoing calls by other legislators in parliament. She warned of a backlash against Maharashtrians in Uttar Pradesh and other states.

On banning of MNS, Dr. Singh said, "I wouldn't like to discuss this issue in public. The situation requires tactful handling; whatever is necessary to restore calm and to restore law and order. Respect for the rule of law, I think should be undertaken." By Naveen Kapoor (ANI)
