Getting bugged off soap operas that only creates fantasy and impart wrong information, here is a feast for soul, a tele-serial Kyunki…Jeena Issi Ka Naam Hai (‘Because...That's What Life Is’) which has been produced by Prasar Bharti Broadcasting Corporation in collaboration with United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF).
The television serial that goes on air on April 07 on Doordarshan One, India’s national public television channel, has its roots in UNICEF's global publication Facts for Life. The series will portray various issues that touch our life and are vital part of India’s achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
Facts for Life is a noble gesture to improve and strengthen our moral value system while passing on valuable messages to the people. Though it will serve as a source of entertainment but at the same time enlighten people on various issues related to maternal mortality, HIV prevention, girl’s education, empowerment of Panchayati raj institutions etc.
The series is based on real life issues and have characters similar to our real life, depicting the day-to-day problem and messages given in the series are strong which will strive for building character of our young generation.
The entire programme is an outcome of almost two years' work; it is based on a fictional rural village, and the show follows six distinct characters as they struggle through their daily lives.
UNICEF hopes to reach 40 million women through this programme which is an amalgamation of both education and entertainment. The evocative lyrics are penned by Gulzar and are perfect for the education-format.
It will fight not only the Saas-bahu flick but also against the lack of awareness among people regarding various problems in our society.
This series is a pioneering effort to see the problem at broader perspective to reach masses. As in India where polio, girl education and female foeticide are still problem, weaving such a beautiful series to strike the root cause is commendable in many ways.
