Chhattisgarh police arrest two, rescue 40 workers

National, Sun, 19 Oct 2008 IANS

Raipur, Oct 19 (IANS) The Chhattisgarh police Sunday claimed to have arrested two human traffickers and rescued 40 workers, including 12 women and six minors, following a raid at the Korba railway station, a senior police officer said here Sunday.

'We raided Korba railway station late Saturday evening when two human traffickers were trying to catch a Haryana-bound train with 40 workers for (which) they had taken advance money for supplying them to a brick-kiln owner in Haryana,' Ratanlal Dangi, superintendent of police, told IANS over phone.

The workers were reportedly from an impoverished tribal village Kerakchhar, some 250 km north from here, and were not even told where they were being taken to, the police said.

Chhattisgarh's vast northern region including Surguja, Korba, Jashpur, Koria and Raigarh are notorious for human trafficking cases where suppliers take impoverished tribals, girls and minors mostly to the metros to work as domestic help.
