June 08: The biggest ever sporting event in India, Military World Games, will commence from Oct 14 to Oct 21, 2007, in two metropolitan cities Hyderabad and Mumbai. It is for the first time that the event will be hosted by an Asia nation. A total 72 countries, including 4700 participants will take part in the 15 events gaming performance in India.
A high level meeting, called by Defence Minister, S.K.Antony, discussed proper arrangements to check wrong practices like doping and drugs use during the sporting event. The Defence Minister stressed on the illegal consumption of drugs and performance enhancers and said that strict dope testing measure will be followed during the conduct of the forthcoming World Games to be held in Hyderabad and Mumbai. Samples of the winners in addition to random samples will be sent to special laboratories in Bangkok.
Present in the meeting were more officials including Minister of State for Defence M.M.Palam Raju, Defence Secretary Shekhar Dutt, Vice Chief of Army Staff Lt General Deepak Kapur and some officials of Games Organisation Commitee. The Defence Minister assured that the event will receive all support from the Ministry and that it should be conducted in the best possible manner.
Military World Games 2007 will be the fourth edition, which follows after a regular four years interval. A large number of participants and tourists from Europe are expected, some of them confirmed, to reach India in the month of October. Infrastructure development and renovations at these two places are carried at a fast pace.
Military World Games are conducted by a sports council, Council of International Military Sports CISM, established in Brussels. India joined the council in 1999 and has been actively engaged since then.
Out of total 15 events, 13 will be held in Hyderabad and the remaining two, Sailing and Triathlon would be held in Mumbai. The sporting events will be Military Pentathlon, Shooting, Parachuting, Football, Handball, Volleyball, Triathlon, Sailing, Swimming, Track & Field, Judo, Boxing and Wrestling.
