Surat, Jan 13 (ANI): In a bid to protect birds from getting injured during the annual kite festival Uttarayana, a non-governmental organization, Prayas organised an awareness seminar, on Thursday in Surat.
The objective of the seminar was to make the people aware about the harm caused to the birds as they use Chinese and glass coated threads or strings to fly kites.
In the seminar, various experts explained to the people about the measures that they should take to protect the birds from getting injured.
Bird expert and member of Prayas, Darshan Desai said that if people would learn the method of giving immediate aid to the injured birds then it would help them to survive.
"The common people who want to rescue injured birds but they do not know the way to do it, if they were given proper training and if they could save atleast one bird then it would be good for them as well as for the birds," said Desai.
The kite lovers in Gujarat who start flocking their terrace weeks before the festival of Uttarayana dotting the sky with multi-hued kites of various sizes and colours, injure a large number of birds every year due to the cuts from the sharp kite strings.
"During this festival of Uttarayana, people fly kites using Chinese or glass coated strings, by which the birds get injured. In order to cure and rehabilitate the injured birds, a seminar was conducted here," said a volunteer, Jignesh Joshi.
According to local media reports, this year make shift operation centers were set up across Gujarat state during the three-day long Uttarayana festival.
Every center has minimum 5-6 members working actively to treat the injured birds.
Last year more than thousand birds were injured during the kite festival and around 700 underwent surgery.
This year the centre has received about 100 cases of injured birds ahead of the kite festival
Uttarayana is celebrated on January 14 every year, the day marked as Makar Sankranti or annual harvest festival in parts of India. (ANI)
