Psychiatrists say Norwegian mass killer Breivik 'is not psychotic'

Oslo, Thu, 05 Jan 2012 ANI

Oslo, Jan 5 (ANI): Prison psychiatrists monitoring Norwegian mass killer, Anders Behring Breivik, have ruled he is not psychotic and has not been put on medication.

The new ruling was contradictory to the original psychiatric analysis, which said Breivik, who admitted carrying out twin attacks in Oslo on 22 July 2011, was insane.

The original finding by two court-appointed psychiatrists was fiercely debated by mental health experts and several lawyers representing the victims of the massacre.

The report released on November 29 described Breivik as a man living in a 'delusional universe,' and a 'paranoid schizophrenic who had lost touch with reality'.

But the expert team of four psychiatrists assessing Breivik in prison disagreed with several of the original conclusions, The Telegraph reports.

According to the report submitted by the Public Prosecutor, Svein Holden, they have not observed any signs suggesting Breivik is psychotic or schizophrenic.

Holden said in a letter to the court said he would not seek another evaluation.

Breivik, 32, has confessed to setting off a bomb that ripped through Oslo's government district, killing eight people, then opening fire at the summer camp of the governing Labor Party's youth wing, killing another sixty-nine.

His trial is set to begin on April 16. If declared mentally fit and convicted of terrorism, Breivik would face up to 21 years in prison or an alternative custody arrangement that could keep him behind bars indefinitely.

If the courts declare him insane, he would be given three-year terms of psychiatric care that can be extended for as long as necessary. (ANI)
