PM makes emotional appeal, emphasises accountability over Lokpal Bill

New Delhi, Tue, 27 Dec 2011 ANI

New Delhi, Dec 27 (ANI): Touching upon the need for trust and accountability, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on Tuesday urged the Opposition to help in the passage of an effective Lokpal Bill while drawing attention to the fact that the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

He cautioned that while creating something in response to inadequacies of the present, we do not destroy all that we cherish, in the name of combating corruption.

"Our polity with its enormous size and diversity can only be held together when we put our faith and trust in institutions that we have carefully built over the years. The power of the electorate is the ultimate authority, which brings accountability to our democratic institutions. In endangering democracy, we will only be unleashing the forces of chaos where reason will give way to emotion," said Dr. Singh in his statement inside the Lok Sabha today.

"We are creating something for the future in response to the inadequacies of the present. We have to be mindful of the pitfalls when we look into the future. Let us not create something that will destroy all that we cherish - all in the name of combating corruption. Let us remember that the road to hell is paved with good intentions," he added.

The Prime Minister further said: "We, as the representatives of the people, must act now to start yet another journey to rebuild the trust that is essential for a strong and vibrant India."

Veteran social activist Anna Hazare is presently on a three-day token fast at the MMRDA grounds in Bandra Kurla Complex of suburban Mumbai along with his close aides Arvind Kejriwal, Kiran Bedi and Manish Sisodia to protest against the government's 'weak' Lokpal Bill.

Team Anna has rejected the government's version of the Lokpal Bill in Parliament, and termed it to be weak. They have been pressurising the government to accept their demands including bringing the CBI under the ambit of the anti-corruption ombudsman. (ANI)
