Islamabad, Dec 26(ANI): The Pakistan army may approach the Supreme Court if the Pakistan People's Party (PPP)- led government sacks either army chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani or Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Lieutenant General Ahmad Shuja Pasha.
A source told the Express Tribune that General Kayani has held several meetings with the army's top commanders to discuss the possible options to tackle the escalating tensions between the army and government in the wake of the Memo Gate probe.
They have reached a consensus that they would move the apex court rather than directly intervening in the conflict, if the government sacked both army and intelligence chiefs, the source added.
The revelation comes after PPP chief spokesperson Qamar Zaman Kaira admitted that some party members had called on the government to sack Pasha and Kayani amid different stances taken by the government and army over the Memo Gate probe.
Both Kayani and Pasha have said the memo is authentic and urged the court to thoroughly probe the scandal, while the Pakistan government has dismissed it as a conspiracy.
Legal experts said though Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani is empowered to remove both Kayani and Pasha under the Pakistan's Constitution, any such attempt is likely to be set aside by the Supreme Court, which is probing the Memo Gate scandal.
"They (Army and ISI chiefs) can challenge the government decision in the SC based on the grounds that it is mala fide (in bad faith) to preempt investigations into the memo case," an advocate Zafarullah Khan said.
"And my feeling is if the government goes to that extent, the Supreme Court may not accept it," he added.
Pakistan military's public relations wing, however, refused to comment on the issue. (ANI)
