Nagpur, Dec 12 (ANI): The debate over raising the minimum price for cotton in Maharashtra continued to escalate on Monday as leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) smashed cars outside the legislative assembly.
The broken glass of car headlights littered the premises outside the assembly here.
The uproar commenced following the start of the winter session today.
Several farmers also took part in a march to press their point and urged the Democratic Front (DF) coalition government to take action.
BJP leader Eknath Khadse said it was natural for the farmers to take to the streets, as the government had failed to respond to their needs.
"I cannot support this, for so many days cotton, paddy and soybean farmers have been coming out on the streets and agitating and the government is not taking this issue very seriously. The farmers are apprehensive about this," he said.
Khadse further said the members of the Yuva Morcha, the youth wing of the BJP, had not been involved in the agitation.
"As far as I know, there were no Yuva Morcha members, but yes the farmers have taken to streets and this is a natural reaction to their suffering," he said.
Farmers were expecting the Maharashtra Government to increase the minimum support price of raw cotton, but the rate still stands at Rs 3,300 per quintal. (ANI)
