Kolkata, Nov. 20 (ANI): Stating that he has begun reviewing programmes at the Panchayat level in West Bengal, Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh on Sunday that his ministry has implemented several schemes for the upliftment of rural sector at the ground level.
Ramesh said that he has. He visited the Maoist affected village of Lalgarh in West Bengal today to oversee development work being carried out in the village.
Addressing the people at the Panchayati Raj Convention in Kolkata, Ramesh said: "Our Rural Development ministry has implemented various schemes at the Panchayat level."
"The biggest programme is Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). Yesterday, I had gone to West Midnapore for a programme organised by the ministry, MGNREGA, Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna (a scheme), Indira Awas Yojana and the pension that we give to elderly people and widows, I reviewed all these programmes to see how they are functioning at the ground level," he added.
Ramesh asserted that the government would have to step up measures to tackle the Maoist insurgency in the state.
"The government has declared 60 districts in different states as Maoist-inflicted, out of which one is in West Bengal, which is West Midnapore and there is a suggestion in front of the government, that Bankura and Purulia would be added too," he said.
Stating that the Naxals are the worst violators of human rights, Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram had earlier on Tuesday said that the people at large need to understand that the rebels are involved in widespread cases of human rights violation.
Despite strong initiatives taken by the Centre, the Maoist insurgency has gripped nearly one-third of the country, spreading into the interiors of 20 states of the country. (ANI)
