Patna, Tue, 15 Nov 2011 ANI

Patna, Nov. 15 (ANI): Stressing on the need for economic development in Bihar, former President, Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam, on Tuesday outlined a framework for developing the state as a hub for spiritual tourism and a brand for agro products.

Kalam, who interacted with the legislators of Bihar here, donned a teacher's hat and shared his vision on the need for economic development of the state.

Highlighting the presence of various significant spiritual centres like Bodhgaya, he stressed on making the province an international hub for spiritual tourism, which will help in generating large-scale employment.

"Bihar is fortunately blessed with spiritual tourism, centres of multi-religions, which have the potential of being international tourist attractions. It is essential to have a vision of tourist attraction with a target of one million international tourists every year and 10 million domestic tourists," said Kalam.

"Indeed Bihar has to have a five year tourism mission that will need infrastructure development, roads and transport systems and training of human resource towards global standards of tourism industry," he added.

Outlining a framework for developing Bihar as a brand for agro products, Kalam said : "Creation of a community managed agriculture marketing system by Bihar government. I will be discussing in detail based on the pointed farmers' experience and their visit to the high production centres in the country, recently they went out on tour."

"My action in above aspect will create a Bihar, a brand for agro products based on the quality and farmers employment," he added.

Kalam noted that Bihar Government should find ways to manage its water resources so as to eliminate the recurring problem of floods and drought in some regions of the state.

"Most of the constituencies in Bihar are frequently affected by floods or water shortage in spite of the blessings of river Ganges and its multiple river systems. There is a big dream of the citizens of Bihar to see a flood free and water shortage free Bihar, which our assembly members should not only be concerned for only five years of their tenure," said Kalam.

"But they (legislators) should be able to give 15 years vision to Bihar, as you have done now, So that Bihar will have a smart water way that will lead to a flood free Bihar with abundance of power, year long irrigation systems in many districts and freedom from pollution and navigational water way, attracting thousands of national and international tourists," he added.

Kalam, who had earlier sent a questionnaire to the legislators and asked for their opinion on a wide range of development issues plaguing their constituencies, read out their replies at the function here.

Encouraging the legislators to fulfil the aspirations of residents of their constituencies, Kalam said: "People visualise in you constituency that in five years time you are going to transform your constituency into an economically developed, happy, prosperous and peaceful constituency of Bihar. Above all members of each constituency are seeking from you a permanent solution to the damage caused from frequent floods and shortage of water in certain districts of Bihar."

"This I consider as one of the great challenges faced by the human beings. You have an opportunity to fill the aspirations of your people within your tenure of five years," he added. (ANI)
