Dharmapuri, Nov 2 (ANI): Inland fish farming has gained popularity and has emerged as a main source of livelihood for the farmers in Mankarai village near Pennagram Taluck in Tamil Nadu's Dharmapuri district, as they incurred huge losses in the fields.
More than 5, 000 farmers in the district have taken to fish-farming business.he farmers are utilizing available water resources in the district for fish farming.
Local ponds are being used for fish-farming under the self-employment scheme.
There are around a thousand ponds, which have been dug by the farmers so that they could resort to fish farming. They spend at least two hours everyday as they tend the fish in these ponds.
Farmers believe that fish farming needs small investment and it is a profitable business.
"For the past ten years, I am doing fish farming. This is a profitable venture for us. We can earn nearly 20,000 to 50,000 rupees in six months. Agriculture is not a suitable business as it is not profitable for us," said Mani, an inland fish farmer from Mankarai village.
Villagers are nurturing a variety of fishes which include Kelzhuthi, Katla, Ruhi, Mrigal, and Kendai in the ponds.
The total investment cost is around rupees 15,000 per pond, and they are able to earn double the amount, which they had invested within three to four months.
The fish is sold for rupees 30 per kg to the bulk buyers and wholesale dealers. In local market, the fish is sold at rates of rupees 250 per kg.
Traders from Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra are the most frequent buyers of these fish. Others who purchase them are fish merchants from the Salem region of Tamil Nadu. (ANI)
