Pataudi (Haryana), Oct 31 (ANI): Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan was anointed the tenth Nawab of Pataudi at a ceremony at his ancestral palace here today.
Saif's father and former Indian cricketer Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, who passed last month, was the ninth and last Nawab of Pataudi until 1971, when India abolished royal entitlements through the 26th Amendment to the Constitution of India.
Heads of the neighbouring 52 villages tied a white turban around Saif's head to complete his anointment as the Nawab of Pataudi.
His mother and Bollywood actress Sharmila Tagore, sisters Saba Ali Khan and Soha Ali Khan were also present for the ceremony.
Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda also attended the ceremony.
Saif Ali Khan will now take care of his father's estate, their ancestral home, eye hospital and other charitable institutions as responsibilities of the newly appointed Nawab.
"Our family was saddened by the death of my father (Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi). I am aware that everyone gathered here were also very disturbed by his demise. The name of Pataudi was made famous all over the world by our father, he loved Pataudi dearly, even I love Pataudi immensely, it's my home. And I will make sure to follow his footsteps," he said.
Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, regarded as one of the finest Indian captains, played 46 Tests for the country, scoring 2,793 runs for an average of 34.91 with an unbeaten 203 being his highest score.
In all, he smashed six centuries and 16 fifties during his career. (ANI)
