Imphal, Oct 30 (ANI): Non governmental organisations (NGOs) and civil bodies will express their solidarity with Irom Sharmila by holding one day hunger strike throughout the nation on November 5.
The nationwide demonstration was planned as part of the two-month long nationwide signature campaign to support Sharmila's struggle, which was launched on October 2.
The signatures will be handed over to President Pratibha Patil on the occasion of the International Human Rights Day on December 10.
It was during Anna Hazare and his team's campaign corruption that they had extended their support to Sharmila's protest who is on an indefinite hunger strike against the controversial anti-terror law Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) since November 2, 2000.
"What I feel what is much more relevant is that AFSPA should be repealed from here because it is making life dangerous for Sharmila. She has lost so much weight and all that and it is also threatening to the population of Manipur. More so to the women population of Manipur and we think that we should do all that we can do in favour of Sharmila and against AFSPA," said Ila Pathak, vice president, Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF).
Pathak added that she would try to rope in international pressure on the Indian government to repeal AFSPA and give relief to Sharmila.
Sharmila, also known as the iron lady, is forcibly fed through a feeding tube much against her wishes. (ANI)
