Panipat (Haryana), Oct 2 (IANS) United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi Thursday launched an ambitious Rs.23 billion (Rs.2,300 crore) Mahatma Gandhi rural housing scheme of the Haryana government in this industrial city.
She described it as a historic scheme in which families of scheduled castes and below poverty line (BPL) will be given 100 square yards plots free of cost in rural areas by the state's Congress government.
Gandhi complimented Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda for choosing Oct 2, the birth anniversary of the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi, for launching the scheme.
'No other day could be more appropriate to launch this scheme to benefit the poor sections of society. The Congress has always stood for the weakest sections of society,' the Congress chief said while addressing the Samajik Kranti rally here.
Gandhi earlier distributed possession letters to some of the 328 first beneficiaries of the free plots allotment scheme at Garhsharnai village near here.
Hooda said that out of about 7,000 villages in the state, proposals have been received for allotment of plots from panchayats of 5,000 villages. He said land had also been identified in these villages.
He said that basic amenities were being provided in such colonies and the scheme would be implemented in 5,000 villages in two years. He said this scheme would benefit 600,000 poor people. The plots would be allotted through draw of lots.
