Siliguri, Oct 3 (ANI): In the wake of recent bomb blasts in the country, security has been beefed up in Siliguri during the ongoing Hindu festival of Durga Puja.
Private security guards and additional closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras have been installed at prominent spots across festival venues, fearing security threats.
Additional paramilitary forces have also been deployed to avert any kind of untoward incident.
"In connection with the security aspect, we have introduced CCTVs at important places, where congregation will be more. We also ensured that the puja guide maps will be displayed at important places, big hoardings. We have also made separate arrangements for traffic as well as general crowd control during the puja festival," said Amit P Javalgi, Additional Superintendent of Police, Siliguri.
Night patrolling by authorities has also been intensified to prevent snatching, robbery and possible thefts in the city.
The police officials have laid special emphasis on traffic management in the city so that the festive spirit is not dampened due to any kind of congestion.
"In addition to this, we are in continuous touch with Border Security Force and Sashatra Seema Bal. We ensure that the borders are completely watched over and no infiltration and no untoward incident take place in those areas. Other than that, the other puja drives are continuing. We are checking hotels and public places so that any suspicious article or for that matter that may cause problem to general public," said Javalgi.
Women officials have also been deployed to avert eve teasing incidents.
Durga Puja also referred to as "Durgotsava" (Festival of Durga), is an annual Hindu festival in South Asia that celebrates worship of the Hindu goddess Durga. It refers to all the six days observed as Mahalaya, Shashthi, Maha Saptami, Maha Ashtami, Maha Navami and Bijoya Dashami.
Durga Puja is widely celebrated in the states of West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, Jharkhand, Orissa and Tripura, where it is a five-day annual holiday.
In West Bengal and Tripura, which has majority of Bengali Hindus it is the biggest festival of the year. Durga Puja is also celebrated in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Punjab, Kashmir, Karnataka and Kerala. (ANI)
