National, Mon, 06 Oct 2008 IANS

Bhubaneswar, Oct 1 (IANS) A 20-year-old man who was allegedly pushed from a moving train by a policeman in Orissa for not paying a fine succumbed to his injuries, officials said Wednesday. The policeman has been arrested.

'The police arrested Pabitra Mohan Nayak, a head constable working in the railway police station in the steel city of Rourkela, some 470 km from here, for allegedly pushing Rajesh Singh from the Chakradharpur-Rourkela passenger train,' police officer Arjun Sahu told IANS.

The incident occurred Tuesday when Nayak asked Singh, a vegetable vendor, to pay a fine of Rs.1,200 for bringing vegetables illegally on the train.

'He (Singh) refused to pay the amount and Nayak pushed him from the running train,' Singh's father Ashok alleged.

One of Singh's legs were severed under the wheels of the train. He was taken to a hospital in Rourkela where he succumbed to his injuries Tuesday night.

'We have arrested Nayak,' Sahu said.

A Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) was arrested in July this year for pushing a 12-year-old boy in the same city from a moving train for not paying a fine of Rs.50.
