'Worst is over' for Pakistan, US as both realise breakdown of ties 'not an option'

Islamabad, Fri, 30 Sep 2011 ANI

Islamabad, Sept 30(ANI): The "worst is over" for Pakistan and the United States, as behind-the-scenes diplomatic efforts have made "substantive progress" towards the normalisation of bilateral ties, a US diplomat has said.

Both countries had gone the extra mile this week to defuse tension, The Express Tribune quoted the diplomat, as saying on the condition of anonymity.

He would not share further details, but did say that Pakistan and the US agreed unequivocally on one central point- that a breakdown in their relationship "is not an option."

A Pakistani official also confirmed that the US and Pakistan were eager to put recent tensions behind them, according to the paper.

"The two sides have realised that they have to maintain this relationship and at the same time agreed that the war of words must be ceased," the official added.

The progress was apparently made during US Ambassador Cameron Munter's talks with Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari and Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir, the paper said.

However, it is unclear if the two countries have been able to overcome their differences on the Haqqani network, which has become the core irritant in the relationship. (ANI)
