Islamabad, Sept 28 (ANI): The recent fallout in relations between the US and Pakistan has led to a flurry of diplomatic activity across the world, with reports saying that Saudi Arabia is now quietly working to mediate between both the countries.
The Express Tribune quoted sources as saying that the meeting between Saudi intelligence officials and Lieutenant General Ahmed Shuja Pasha took place at the Chaklala Airbase, while some reports claimed that the ISI chief, after a "crucial" meeting with the Saudi intelligence officials, rushed to Jeddah for further consultations.
On being approached, a senior military official confirmed that a delegation of Saudi intelligence officials was on a visit to Islamabad, but insisted it had nothing to do with the ongoing controversy between Pakistan and the US.
"We have counter-terrorism cooperation with the US and the visit was part of that cooperation," the official said, denying that Pasha had rushed to Saudi Arabia for further talks.
Meanwhile, US Ambassador Cameron Munter, who recently returned from Washington, held a meeting with Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir.
Recently, China also took keen interest in the issue by sending a delegation led by Chinese Vice Prime Minister Meng Jianzhu, who is also China's top security official, and holding talks with Pakistani civilian and military leaders in Islamabad.
In a related development, Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani cancelled a trip to the UK, where he was due to meet Defence Secretary Liam Fox. Pakistan Army spokesman General Athar Abbas said the visit had been "postponed indefinitely" to focus on the mounting US pressure for Pakistan to axe its alleged support for the Haqqani network. He however, insisted that the visit will be re-scheduled.
Meanwhile, Pakistan foreign ministry spokesperson Tehmina Janjua has said that both the countries have agreed to hold "dialogue and seek deeper engagement at all levels." (ANI)
