US, Pak agree to remove 'misunderstanding' over 'ISI linked to Haqqanis' issue

Islamabad, Tue, 27 Sep 2011 ANI

Islamabad, Sept 28 (ANI): A meeting between US Ambassador to Pakistan Cameron Munter and Pakistan Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir seems to have ended on a positive note, with a source saying that both the sides agreed to remove 'misunderstandings' and continue with the negotiation process to avoid further confrontation over the Haqqani network allegations.

Last week, outgoing US military chief Admiral Mike Mullen had described the Haqqani network as a "veritable arm" of the ISI that was being used to fight a "proxy war" in Afghanistan, an allegation which was refuted by all top Pakistani ministers.

However, during the recent meeting, the Pakistan Foreign Office urged the US to stop levelling baseless charges against Islamabad. Bashir also demanded sharing of intelligence regarding Haqqani network, the Daily Times reports.

Munter said he would update his government about Pakistan's point of view.

Earlier, US Deputy Secretary of State for South Asia Robert Blake had said that there is a need to improve ties with Pakistan and help its people who are facing political, economic and security problems.

"It is important for all of us to move forward and work together," he said, adding: "We need to help people and government of Pakistan in resolving their political, economic and security problems and in fact it is the time to focus on these issues." (ANI)
