Kolkata, Sep 25 (ANI): Family members of Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh wished him on the eve of his 79th birthday today. He would turn 79 on Monday.
He was born to Gurmukh Singh and Amrit Kaur on September 26, 1932, in Gah village of Punjab during the British rule. Gah village is now in Pakistan's Chakwal District.
Dr. Singh's mother died when he was very young and was raised by his paternal grandmother.
The Prime Minister's sister, Gobind Kaur, expressed her excitement on the eve of his birthday.
"I am feeling very happy that his birthday is coming. He would turn 79 tomorrow (Monday, September 26). We celebrate his birthday happily. When we visit his residence, Bhabhiji (Gursharan Kaur) organise 'Kirtan' (a devotional song). We visit Gurudwara and listen to the 'Kirtan' and 'Paath' (recitation of the Holy texts) and we also organise 'Ardaas' (a Sikh prayer) over there," Gobind Kaur told mediapersons here.
The Prime Minister is currently in US and attended the 66th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York with an aim to boost India's image on the international stage.
In his address to the General Assembly, Dr. Singh talked about reforms within the United Nations, as no significant changes were made since its inception.
Dr. Singh was instrumental in bringing about economic reforms in India during his tenure as Finance minister from 1991 till 1996. (ANI)
