Now, development the watchword in Assam's Kakotiya village

Sivasagar (Assam), Sep 20 (ANI): As militancy declines in the northeast, people living in rural areas have been the biggest beneficiaries of speeded up development in states such as Assam.

An example of this is Kakotiya village in Assam's Sivasagar District. Kakotiya comprised of four small hamlets and has a population of nearly 2500 people. It earlier served as a safe haven for militants. But things have changed now.

Development work has gained momentum that was stalled by militancy and several centrally sponsored programs for creating jobs, building houses, bringing students to school, development of rail and road infrastructure are being implemented in the village. One such scheme is Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna under which new roads are being constructed.

"Now we are constructing this road and it will be of great help to all of us and it will give us access to roads and markets easily. Such initiatives are essential for the development of our village," said Nilaram Gogoi, a villager.

The new road will be 3.75 metre wide and 12-inches thick. It will connect Amguri sub-division and Samuguri in Sivasagar district.

The Government has earmarked Rs 90 lakhs for its construction and work is in full swing. The construction work has created jobs for many unemployed people in the area who are paid Rs 200 per day.

Most of the villagers here are engaged in farming and sell their produce in the nearby market, 11 kms away. The poor condition of the roads earlier, created problems for the people. But as soon as the construction is completed busses will ply on the road.

"If the road is good then any business can flourish here. This will reduce wastage of time and will lead to development of the region," said Deepa Borah, another villager.

"Earlier the road was in bad shape. But now they are constructing it and it is beneficial for all of us. Also, the transportation of goods will take less time and children can go to school without any hassles," Borah added.

Both the state governments and the centre are totally committed to development of infrastructure in the northeastern region. Several schemes and projects are being run that provide monetary and technical assistance to the people in these rural areas so that they can uplift their socio-economic standards. (ANI)
