Guwahati, Sep 20 (ANI): Former Assam Chief Minister and AGP leader Prafulla Mahanta has opposed the recent agreement to hand over Indian land to Bangladesh.
Addressing mediapersons here on Monday, Mahanta said: "The Central as well as the state government are supposed to protect the sovereignty and integrity of the nation.
"Our Prime Minister and the Chief Minister, they took oath. They took charge of the country and the state. So, they are going to save the sovereignty and integrity of the country. Now, this government decided to hand over the land of Assam that is India to Bangladesh. We oppose it and we demand before the federal government that portions of Assam, where they mentioned that this land should be given to Bangladesh, should be dropped and demand of the people of Assam should be accepted," he added.
Mahanta also held protests near a Mahatma Gandhi statue in the city..
"It is due to the sincerity of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, we got independence. Due to the struggle of the people of India, we got freedom but with partition. Mahatma Gandhi opposed it. But after partition when the leaders of the central government wanted to give Assam to East-Pakistan, the people of Assam appealed to Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhai Patel and due to their leadership, Assam remained with India," said Mahanta.
During the recent visit of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to Dhaka, a deal was inked under which New Delhi had agreed to transfer 600 acres of Assam's land to bordering Bangladesh. This was done to settle the long pending boundary dispute with Dhaka.
The agreement had affirmed that the India would hand over the land, presently in Dhubri and Hailakandi regions of Assam to Bangladesh. (ANI)
