Sikkim Earthquake: Death toll rises as rains and landslide hamper the rescue works

The overall death toll from Sunday Evening earthquake rises to 40 in various parts of the country and neighbourhood countries due to continuously rains and landslide in the affected areas that has hampered the rescue operation, an unofficial report says.

Sikkim, the most affected Indian state has witness at least 20 aftershocks till today morning after a powerful 6.8 magnitude of earth quake jolted the entire north India, and neighbourhood countries Nepal, Tibet and Bangladesh where seven people each in Nepal and Tibet have been died and almost 10 have been injured in Bangladesh due to collapsing of building, media reports said.

The death toll has increased to 19 in Sikkim and five in West Bengal, as several people have still trapped in the debris despite the rescue operation is going on at war stage. The continuous rains and landslide have hurt the rescue operation, as several important roads in the state have been washed away and the main highway has been blocked.

The most affected regions in Sikkim are North District and nearby villages and towns located at Teesta rivers like Rangpo, Dikchu, Singtam and Chungthang etc.

Due to high magnitude tremor and 20 aftershocks, the residents are frightened and have spent their nights outside the houses in Sikkim. However, the powercut problem has been resolved till today morning.

The Union Home Ministry in its report has stated that as much as 16 landslides were held in a stretch of 10 km in Sikkim. More than 400 rescue workers of NDRF were facing problems in reaching Sikkim's capital Gangtok due to blockage of roads and land slides.

As much as 712 personnel of ITBP are already engaged in rescue and relief operations in Sikkim, report said.

Four Dhruv and five Cheetah helicopters were also engaged in the rescue operation in Sikkim.

Reports from other parts of the country have stated that the death toll in West Bengal has also been raised to five.

In the recent update a minor earthquake measuring 3.9 on the Richter Scale shook Maharashtra on early Monday, an official report Seismological Monitoring Centre said. of barely 12 hours after a powerful quake jolted northern and eastern India, an official said.

The quake was felt at 6.22 am with the epicentre in Latur district.
