Guwahati, Sep.16 (ANI): The All Assam Students Union (AASU) has protested the recent agreement to hand over Indian land to Bangladesh.
AASU activists led a huge protest rally in Guwahati on Thursday.
Theys marched to the Governor's House and presented a memorandum to the Governor, J. B. Patnaik to scrap the land deal.
During Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's recent two-day visit to Dhaka, New Delhi had agreed to transfer 600 acres of Assam's land to Bangladesh to settle a long pending boundary dispute with Dhaka.
The agreement affirmed that India would hand over 600 acres of land in Dhubri and Hailakandi regions of Assam to Bangladesh.
However, the decision has invited criticism from AASU.
AASU's adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya said that neither the Prime Minister nor the Chief Minister (Tarun Gogoi) have the right to give away land of the state to a neighbouring country without discussing the issue with the people of Assam.
"We met the governor of our state. We have submitted a memorandum demanding that the decision in which the Assam land was handed over to Bangladesh, that clause should be scrapped," Bhattacharya said.
Bhattacharya also questioned the very idea of such a deal with Bangladesh, stating further that they would never agree to such a deal with Pakistan.
"Yes, it is a disrespect to our soldiers. It is an insult to their sacrifice and the martyrs. Plus, the Government of India and the Government of Assam don't have the right to hand over Assam's land to Bangladesh. Does the central government have the guts to hand over an inch of India's land to Pakistan in the western sector? They don't have it," he added.
The Bharatiya Janata Party is also opposing the agreement.
BJP General Secretary Pradyut Bora said that though 10 pacts were signed during the recent visit of the Prime Minister, not a single one addresses the problem of the over 40 lakh illegal Bangladeshi migrants residing in Assam. (ANI)
