Srinagar, Sep.15 (ANI): The Jammu and Kashmir Government organised a friendly polo match here on Wednesday with an aim to promote the sport in the state.
"As far as this location is concerned this ground is here from the time of king and this area is known after this polo ground. It is for the first time after the end of the rule of the king that a match is being held at the same place and efforts are being made to revive polo and it is a historical day," said Mohammad Sultan, a polo player.
The two teams that locked horns with each other on the polo ground were Kashmir Reds and Kashmir Blues.
Players of Drass Polo Club represented Kashmir Reds while the Polo Club of Leh played for Kashmir Blues.
Several attempts were made earlier by the authorities to organize such events in the valley. However, their efforts failed to yield the desired result owing to the prevalence of militancy in the state.
"We will try to organise such matches and tournaments in the near future, so that the youth in the region can associate with this game," said R S Chib, provincial sports minister.
Chib added that the government would provide all kinds of assistance if it saw that the people of the valley were inclined towards the game.
Polo lost its popularity after the fall of the Dogra regime in the State and since 1947 the game was confined to only Leh and Kargil.
The game had become popular in Kashmir during the British rule and it was mostly played on important occasions. (ANI)
