New Delhi, Sep.12 (ANI): Maldivian Defence Minister Thalhath Ibrahim Kaleyfaanu was given a guard of honour here on Monday at the start of his five-day official visit to India.
Kaleyfaanu was welcomed by his Indian counterpart A K Antony.
During his visit, Kaleyfaanu will hold extensive talks on bilateral cooperation and regional security issues between the two countries.
Interacting with mediapersons, Kaleyfaanu said that India had always extended assistance to Maldives on both economic and security fronts and his visit would serve to further develop the relations between the countries.
"We will be discussing the relations and to further strengthen our relations between India and Maldives, and the other thing will be the maritime issues that we will discuss and strengthen that India and Maldives, so that will be one of my key points. I believe that we are always very close and India is more than a friend and India has always helped us in difficult times, economically and security-wise. So, we are always dependent on India as far as our security is concerned, so we will further discuss on that how we can go further from this point," said Kaleyfaanu.
Kaleyfaanu will be in India till September 15.
India and Maldives share extremely cordial ties which further strengthened during a coup attempt in 1988, when dissidents backed by Tamil paramilitaries from Sri Lanka had ended with the Indian Navy chasing and sinking a vessel, which the plotters had attempted to escape on with the hostages. (ANI)
