Washington, Sept 12 (ANI): 'Contagion' has taken the top spot at the box office, amassing a revenue of 23.1 million dollars over its first weekend.
According to the BBC, the Warner Bros. Thriller directed by Steven Soderbergh, including an all-star cast - Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow is based on the race to contain a lethal virus threatening the entire planet.
"I think Steven Soderbergh made a compelling movie that tapped into that fear that many of us have about illnesses, viruses and pandemics," Fox News quoted Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros. general sales manager as saying.
"It's like a train or car accident. You can't look away. You prefer not to think about it, but when it's presented to you, you want to learn more," Goldstein stated.
Following 'Contagion' was the acclaimed DreamWorks Pictures drama 'The Help', which is about black Southern maids speaking out during the civil-right-rights movement, which took the 2nd spot with 8.7 million dollars after three weeks at the top.
Lionsgate's mixed-martial arts drama 'Warrior' took the 3rd spot with a revenue of 5.6 million dollars. (ANI)
