Centre must withdrawn 2003 notification for SGPC elections: Amarinder Singh

Ludhiana , Sat, 03 Sep 2011 ANI

Ludhiana, Sep 3(ANI): Former Punjab Chief Minister captain Amarinder Singh has said that the Central government must withdraw the notification issued in 2003 which prevents Sehajdhari or non-baptised Sikhs from participating in the elections to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC).

"Everybody whose birth is here has a right to vote," Amarinder said.

He said that the 1925 Act clearly specifies that the Sehajdharis are as much Sikhs as anyone else.

Amarinder's comment came after Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram asserted that the Central government had not withdrawn the notification as claimed by senior advocate Harbhagwan Singh in the High Court of Punjab and Haryana.

"He appears to have made the claim that he was representing the Government of India and he stated that the notification dated 8.10.2003 was being withdrawn by the Government of India. On his statement, the High Court is reported to have passed certain orders," Chidambaram had said.

The Home Minister also said that the Centre wishes to make it clear that there is no proposal to rescind or withdraw the notification.

"Government will bring the above facts to the notice of the High Court today," he had said.

Amarinder also said that he had nothing to do with senior advocate Harbhagwan Singh. (ANI)
