New York, Aug 31(ANI): World No.1 Novak Djokovic and reigning champion Rafael Nadal were opening-round winners at the US Open on Tuesday.
Djokovic, who was battling a shoulder injury earlier this month, spent 44 minutes on the Arthur Ashe Stadium taking a 6-0, 5-1, when Ireland's Conor Niland retired because of food poisoning, Xinhua reports.
Meanwhile, second-seeded Nadal opened the defence of his US Open title with a straight-sets win over Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan.
The 25-year-old saved seven set points in the second and battled back from two breaks down in the third to beat Golubev 6-3, 7-6, 7-5.
His next match will be against Nicolas Mahut, the Frenchman who lost the 70-68 fifth set to John Isner at Wimbledon last year. (ANI)
