New Delhi, Aug.17(ANI): The stalemate between the government and veteran social activist Anna Hazare continues over the proposed Lokpal Bill, with the latter refusing to leave Tihar Jail till he is unconditionally allowed to continue with his fast unto death at Delhi's Jai Prakash Narain Park.
Hazare and key aide Arvind Kejriwal spent Tuesday night in the conference room of the Director General (Prisons) of Tihar Jail and reportedly slept barely for about four hours. He continues to be on a fast inside the prison premises after turning the down the release order sent by the government.
Security has been beefed up outside Tihar Jail, even as thousands of people continue to maintain a vigil outside in support of Hazare and his team. A majority of the people said that the government has no business to send Hazare to jail, or to deny a democratic right to protest. They insisted that the government must listen and act against corrupt practices rather than spending time in parliament exchanging verbal blows with the opposition.
Reports indicate that Tihar Jail officials and a cornered government will take a final call on what to do with Hazare and his team at around 10 a.m. Some reports said that there could be a compromise in the offing.
Hazare's key aide Manish Sisodia, who was released from the jail on Tuesday, said: "Anna is adamant on continuing his fast at Jai Prakash Narain (JP) Park. Anna Hazare and Arvind Kejriwal continue to fast inside jail."
On Tuesday, Hazare was placed in judicial custody in Tihar Jail for a week. That judicial order was rescinded at around 9.30 p.m. last evening.
Earlier, Delhi Police had denied permission to stage a fast at J P Park after the 74-year-old social activist refused to abide by all the 22 conditions set by them. (ANI)
