Tangmarg (Jammu and Kashmir), Aug.13 (ANI): The Lok Adalat or the people's court is gaining popularity among locals in Tangmarg town of Baramulla district in India's northern Jammu and Kashmir state with its quick redressal of their grievances.

The Legal Services Committee of Tangmarg recently conducted a mega Lok Adalat and resolved approximately 500 pending cases.

Interacting with mediapersons, Mohammad Abdullah Pal, a beneficiary from Srinagar, highlighted the importance of the Lok Adalat for the poor.

"We are very happy that the Lok Adalat (People's Court) has been convened here (in Tangmarg). People are not aware about the cases and courts. A lot of money is consumed during the trial of cases (in the general courts) and it involves many other things as well. But this thing does not happen in the Lok adalat. The judges do the justice (to the cases) and the cases are solved in front of the concerned parties in a dignified manner. This is why Lok Adalat should happen," said Pal.

The mega Lok Adalat week commenced from August 11th and aims to solve those cases that have been pending, in courts for many years.

These courts have helped the poor people and solved their cases within short span of time.

"The main objective of the Lok adalat is that concerned parties don't have animosity between them and they settle their disputes in Lok Adalat. After that, the Lok Adalat approves the cases, and then, they (parties) can implement it as a decree in the court," said Wajahat Hussain, Judicial Magistrate in Tangmarg.

Locals have welcomed these courts and demanded that they should continue in the future as well.

Cases related to land and matrimonial disputes, traffic violations and personal conflicts are mostly solved at these courts.

Lok Adalats first started in the valley in 1997 under the Legal Service Authorities Act. (ANI)
