New Delhi, Aug.13 (ANI): Senior leader of India's main opposition, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) L.K.Advani and the Chief Minister of Delhi, Sheila Dikshit celebrated Raksha Bandhan, the Hindu festival that marks the bond between siblings, on Sunday with children here.
On the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, a sister ties Rakhi, a sacred thread, on the wrist of her brother as a token of her love and wishes him prosperity and happiness.
In turn, the brother pledges to protect his sister's honour and offers some cash or gifts to her.
A number of schoolchildren from Delhi and other suburbs tied rakhis (sacred thread) on the wrist of Advani.
"In India, every festival holds a special meaning. Each festival conveys a message to society. The festival of Raksha Bandhan also has a deep significance. This festival has a lot of purity," said Advani.
The children, aged between five and 10, recited songs and interacted with Advani.
Children also tied rakhis on the wrist of Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and she gave them sweets and gifts.
"We have come here to tie rakhis on the wrist of Sheila Dikshit. We met her. She gave us chocolates and sweets," said Anshika, a participant.
The origin of Raksha Bandhan dates back several centuries, to the era when an upper caste Hindu queen Rani Roopmati, in the course of a battle, sent a Rakhi thread to Mughal ruler Humayun, requesting protection from the enemy.
Emperor Humayun accepted the thread and honoured her request.
Since then, the tradition has continued in most Hindu families, particularly in northern, central and western parts of India.
Even though the festival is deeply rooted in Indian tradition, the younger generation views it more as a family get together. (ANI)
